HILLPOINT NEWS & NOTES

There will be a Title I Parent Involvement workshop @ Hillpoint tonight, Tuesday, January 10th  from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The Workshop is entitled, “How to Night”.

SCHOOLS CLOSED IN OBSERVANCE OF MLK HOLIDIAY. Schools will be closed on Monday, January 16th in observance  of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Schools will     re-open for students and staff on Tuesday, January 17th.

EARLY DISMISSAL (Elementary Students are dismissed at 12:45 p.m.) . Elementary school students will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m.  on the following days, January 25th -27th.  Please make arrangements for your student(s) on these dates.

Parent-Teacher Conference Day (10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) - Friday, Feb. 10th

Awards Day Ceremony for grades K-1 starts @ 1:30 p.m. – Monday, Feb. 13th

Awards Day Ceremony for grades 2-3 starts @ 1:30 p.m. – Tuesday, Feb. 14th

Awards Day Ceremony for grades 4-5 starts @ 1:30 p.m. -Wednesday,  Feb. 15th

Suffolk Elementary Grading and Promotion Policy

Section
8-33.6 Kindergarten promotion criteria
–Except
in cases where the school superintendent recommends student promotion based on
rationale determined by the division,the following promotion criteria must be
met in order for a student to be promoted in kindergarten:(i) successful
completion of the five core subjects of Reading,Writing,Mathematics,Science,
and History/Social Sciences as evidenced by the report card;(ii) satisfactory
growth in social development as evidenced by documentation on the report card;
and (iii) meet or exceed benchmark on literacy screening instrument.

Section 8-33.7 Grades 1 and 2 promotion criteria –Except in cases where the school superintendent
recommends student promotion based on rationale determined by the division,the
following promotion criteria must be met in order for a student to be promoted
in grades 1 and 2:(i) successful completion of the five core subjects of
Reading,Writing,Mathematics,Science,and History/Social Sciences as
evidenced by the report card;and (ii) meet or exceed the benchmark on literacy
screening instrument;and (iii) mastery (80%) of the division’s Standard of
Learning (SOL) assessments or the Division End of Year (EOY) Standards of
Learning assessments in the core subject areas of English and Mathematics.

Section 8 –
33.8 Grades 3 through 5 promotion criteria

- Except in cases where the school
superintendent recommends student promotion based on rationale determined by
the division,the following promotion criteria must be met in order for a
student to be promoted in grades 3 through 5:(i) successful completion of the
five core subjects of Reading,Writing,Mathematics,Science,and
History/Social Sciences as evidenced by the student report card;(ii) mastery
of the division’s Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments (80%) or the Virginia
Standards of Learning assessments (400) in English and Mathematics;and (iii)
meet or exceed the benchmark on literacy screening instrument is also required
for grade 3.

Volunteers Needed ~ United Way Events

October – “Change for United Way Month” – Students will bring in
change to support the campaign and the class that brings in the most change will
receive a popcorn party at the end of the month.

October 14th – Kickball game
Hillpoint Staff vs 5th Grade – Students will need
to bring $1.00 to attend this event.

November 10th –“ Dance for United Way” – A school dance will be held in the gymnasium to support United
Way.  Students will need to pay $1.00 to attend.
