Ladies of Distinction

The Ladies of Distinction leadership program is designed to encourage, empower, and equip girls to be holistically healthy and strong educationally, emotionally, socially, and physically. L.O.D delivers this mission through these ten laws:

1. Be Confident in Yourself
2. You Get What you Accept
3. Have a Positive Attitude
4. If you to Plot It's a Not
5. Check Yourself
6. Learn from the Past
7. Choose Friends Wisely
8. Guard your Heart
9. Set the Tone
10. Don't Settle for Less

Various community leaders are invited to speak to the group to share their knowledge about leadership. The Ladies participate in volunteer efforts throughout the community, and raise donations for local groups. The Ladies of Distinction are led by Ms. Woodley.

Safety Patrol

Safety patrol is a very selective group of 4th and 5th grade students who are leaders and role models. The Safety Patrol members work to keep the Hillpoint student body safe by monitoring hallways at arrival and dismissal times.

Talented Art

Talented Art is an elite group of student artists. Students are given a test in 3rd/4th grade, and based on their score, they may be asked to turn in a portfolio of artwork. Their art is evaluated and their combined scores will determine if they are invited to join Talented Art. The students meet once a week in the art room and get to work on special and more advanced projects. They also go on field trips, including to the Suffolk Art Museum. Mr. Lane is currently our Talented Art teacher.

Talented Music

Talented Music is a group of select 4th and 5th grade students. A test is given in the spring to identify students that meet this gifted criteria. This group meets once a week to learn the recorder, sing songs, and are taught about various aspects of music history and composers. Each spring, they perform with about 250 students from other schools at the evening STARS concert. Ms. Sagendorf is currently our Talented Music teacher.

Girls on the Run

The program offers fun, evidence-based activities that empower participants to discover their inner strength, stay physically active, imagine what’s possible, and confidently stand up for themselves and others.

The team meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30–6:00 p.m. Our program emphasizes teamwork, relationship-building, and personal growth. Each season, participants complete a meaningful community service project and celebrate their accomplishments by participating in the end-of-season 5K event.

Girls on the Run at Hillpoint Elementary offers Fall and Spring seasons, depending on coach availability. Our current coaches are Ms. Lahmann (Head Coach) and Ms. Kilburn, and we are actively seeking additional coaches so more girls can participate.

Sports

The 4th and 5th grade girls and boys basketball teams tryouts were held on November 5th & 6th. Our team was chosen on November 7th. Students practice every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:45pm to 5:00pm.

The tournament will be played in January at King Fork High School. This year, the format will be 3 on 3. The  tournament will be held and completed in one day.

Track tryouts will probably be held sometime in the spring and weekly training will start after basketball is over.

Our sports teams are led by Coach Giles.

Cupcake Talk Club

Cupcake Talk Club is a fun, welcoming enrichment and character-building club for students in grades 3–5, with a few select 2nd graders. The club focuses on helping students build confidence, leadership, creativity, and meaningful connections through engaging conversations, hands-on activities, and teamwork. Students are encouraged to express themselves, support one another, and discover their unique talents in a positive and nurturing environment. At this time, the club has reached its maximum number of members; however, the club will continue to host special events and activities so more students can join in on the fun and excitement.  Cupcake Talk Club is sponsored by Princess Cuffee, with the support of her daughter, Eelycia, a sophomore at Virginia Virtual Academy, along with dedicated volunteers and community partners.
